Digital Citizenship - Social Media

TUSD's Digital Citizenship focus for the month of November is social media.  Here is some helpful information:

  • Understand who can see what when you post to Facebook, make a tweet, or upload something to a social media website. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. all have ways to limit who has access to what you post. However…
  • Before you go to a website or post something on Facebook, it’s important to remember that once you click a button, you leave a digital footprint!
  • Your digital footprint is persistent, meaning is can last a long time, even if you delete it. If you post something, it’s hard to remove. Other people can pass it on, copy it, and retweet it. What you say and do online can either help or harm your reputation and image.
  • The internet is public, and sharing too much information can be embarrassing and costly.
  • There are great opportunities online to show who you really are and promote yourself. However, there are also ways to hurt your opportunities in the future if you post inappropriate things, or hurt or make fun of others. Don’t jeopardize your chances- only interact online in a way that you can take pride in.
  • Know the difference between cyberbullying and “digital drama.” Cyberbullying is repeated harassment. Digital drama is the everyday tiffs and disputes that happen among friends and acquaintances online or through text messages. Digital Drama can escalate to something serious that happens offline and should be addressed immediately.
